How to Play 2048

📖 The Basic Rules

  1. You play on a square grid (default 4×4) filled with numbered tiles.
  2. Each turn you choose one direction: up, down, left, or right.
  3. Every tile on the board slides as far as it can in that direction until it hits the wall or another tile.
  4. When two tiles with the same number bump into each other, they merge into one tile with their values added together. For example, two 2s combine into a 4; two 4s combine into an 8; two 8s combine into a 16; and so on — every merge doubles the value.
  5. After every move, a brand-new tile appears in a random empty cell. It is usually a 2 (90% of the time) or a 4 (10%).
  6. The game ends when the board is full and no adjacent tiles can merge — that means no legal moves remain.

🧮 Merging — Worked Examples

  • [2, 2, _, _] sliding left[4, _, _, _] (two 2s merged into a 4).
  • [2, 2, 2, 2] sliding left[4, 4, _, _] (two separate merges in one move).
  • [4, 4, 2, _] sliding left[8, 2, _, _].
  • [2, 4, 2, 4] sliding left[2, 4, 2, 4] — no move (nothing to merge or slide). You'd lose a turn, so the game ignores it.
  • Important: a tile can only merge once per move. So [4, 2, 2, _] sliding left gives [4, 4, _, _], not [8, _, _, _] — the freshly-merged 4 won't merge again until your next move.

🎯 The Goal — and What "Target" Means

The classic goal is to build a tile worth 2048. To get there you must merge two 1024 tiles, which means first merging two 512s, which means merging two 256s, and so on down to the humble 2s. It's a chain of 11 doublings from 2 → 2048.

2048 Quest lets you pick a harder finish line via the Win Target setting:

  • 2048 — the original challenge. Reachable on a 4×4 board with good technique. (11 doublings.)
  • 4096 — twice as hard. You must keep playing past 2048 and merge two 2048 tiles. (12 doublings.)
  • 8192 — extremely tough on 4×4. (13 doublings.) Much easier on bigger boards because more space = more time before the board fills.
  • 16384 — true endurance mode. Best attempted on 6×6 or 8×8 boards.

Each step up the target ladder roughly doubles the time, moves, and care needed. Reaching the target wins the round, but you can choose "Keep Playing" to keep chasing bigger tiles after that.

📏 Board Sizes

  • 4×4 — the classic. Tight, intense, every move matters.
  • 5×5 — slightly more breathing room. Friendlier for beginners chasing 2048.
  • 6×6 — comfortable for chasing 4096 and 8192.
  • 8×8 — sandbox-style. Ideal for the 16384 target or just relaxed merging.

🎮 Controls

  • Desktop: Arrow keys ← ↑ → ↓ or W A S D to move.
  • Mobile / Touch: swipe on the board in any of the four directions, or tap the on-screen arrow buttons.
  • Undo: press U or Ctrl+Z, or click the Undo button. There is no limit on how far back you can undo.
  • Redo: Ctrl+R or the Redo button.
  • Esc closes any open dialog.

💡 Strategy Tips

  • Anchor a corner. Pick one corner (most players choose bottom-right) and keep your largest tile there forever. Build a chain of descending values along the edge.
  • Avoid the "up" key if you're anchoring at the bottom — it will yank your anchor tile away and ruin your chain.
  • Build a snake. Try to keep tiles ordered along a row, e.g. 1024 → 512 → 256 → 128 in a single line, so they can chain-merge.
  • Keep the bottom row full whenever possible. Empty corners are dangerous.
  • Plan two moves ahead. Before pressing a direction, ask: "where will the new random tile likely land, and will I still have a good move next turn?"
  • Use Undo to learn, not just to win. Try a move, see how the board reacts, and undo if you spot a better plan.

🛠️ Built-in Tools
